Asphalt Weight FAQ

Everything you need to know about converting asphalt volume to weight for your paving project.

On average, one cubic metre of compacted hot mix asphalt weighs between 2.30 and 2.50 metric tonnes. Loose, uncompacted asphalt is lighter, typically around 2.10 tonnes per cubic metre, because it contains more air voids before rolling.

Yes. Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and asphalt millings are generally lighter than fresh hot mix asphalt, weighing around 1.75 to 1.80 tonnes per cubic metre due to their looser, broken-up structure.

To calculate the volume in cubic metres (m³), measure the length, width, and thickness of the area in metres, then multiply them together: Volume = Length × Width × Thickness. For example, a driveway 10m long, 3m wide, and 0.05m (5cm) thick requires 1.5 m³ of asphalt.

Coverage depends on the compacted thickness. At a standard depth of 5cm (0.05m), 1 tonne of hot mix asphalt (approx. 2.35 t/m³) will cover approximately 8.5 square metres. Thicker layers reduce the coverage area per tonne.
