Step Count FAQ
Everything you need to know about converting kilometers to steps, measuring stride length, and tracking your daily fitness goals.
To convert kilometers to steps, first convert the distance to centimeters (multiply by 100,000). Then, divide that number by your stride length in centimeters. For example, 1 km (100,000 cm) divided by an average stride of 75 cm equals approximately 1,315 steps.
The average stride length for a man is approximately 75 to 78 centimeters (about 2.5 feet), while for a woman, it is typically 65 to 70 centimeters (about 2.2 feet). Your exact stride length depends on your height and leg length.
On average, there are about 1,300 to 1,500 steps in 1 kilometer. This varies based on your height and stride length. A person with a shorter stride will take more steps to cover the same distance.
10,000 steps is approximately 7.5 to 8 kilometers for the average adult. If you have a longer stride, you will cover more distance in 10,000 steps, whereas a shorter stride means you will cover less distance.
To measure your exact stride length, walk 10 normal steps and measure the total distance in centimeters. Divide that total distance by 10 to get your average stride length per step. You can also estimate it by multiplying your height in cm by 0.413 for men, or 0.415 for women.
