The Morning After FAQ

Everything you need to know about morning after BAC, UK drink driving limits, and hangover recovery.

The human body processes alcohol at an average rate of 15mg/100ml (roughly one unit) per hour. If you consumed 10 units of alcohol, it will take approximately 10 hours for your liver to completely eliminate the alcohol. There is no way to speed up this process; coffee, cold showers, or food will not lower your Blood Alcohol Content (BAC).

Many people fail breathalyser tests the morning after a night out. If you drank heavily late into the evening, you could easily be over the legal limit at 8 AM. Always use a morning after calculator to estimate your BAC, and when in doubt, do not drive or take public transport.

BAC is estimated using the Widmark formula, which factors in the grams of alcohol consumed, your body weight, and your gender (which determines body water content). It then subtracts the alcohol eliminated over the hours since you stopped drinking.

In England and Wales, the legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood (80mg/100ml). In Scotland, the limit is much stricter at 50mg/100ml. Northern Ireland currently follows the 80mg/100ml limit.

While only time can sober you up, you can mitigate hangover symptoms by staying hydrated. A general rule is to drink at least 500ml of water for every 2 units of alcohol consumed, and continue hydrating the next morning. Eating a balanced meal and taking electrolytes can also help.
