Puppy Feeding FAQ
Everything you need to know about feeding your puppy, from calorie calculations to transitioning to adult food.
The amount you should feed your puppy depends on their current weight, age, and the caloric density of their food. Generally, puppies require about 3 times their Resting Energy Requirement (RER) under 4 months, and 2 times their RER between 4 and 12 months. Always check the feeding guide on your specific dog food packaging as a baseline.
Puppies have small stomachs and high energy needs, so they require frequent meals. From 8 to 12 weeks old, feed 4 meals a day. From 3 to 6 months, reduce to 3 meals a day. From 6 to 12 months, feed 2 meals a day. After 1 year, most dogs do well on 2 meals daily.
Most dogs can transition from puppy food to adult food around 12 months of age. However, large and giant breeds (like Great Danes or Mastiffs) grow slower and should stay on puppy food until they are 18 to 24 months old to support proper joint development.
Veterinarians use the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula: RER = 70 x (body weight in kg)^0.75. To find the daily calorie needs, multiply the RER by a life-stage factor: 3.0 for puppies under 4 months, 2.0 for puppies 4-12 months, and 1.4 to 1.6 for adult dogs.
Free-feeding (leaving food out all day) is generally not recommended for puppies. It can lead to overeating and obesity, makes it difficult to monitor their appetite (a key indicator of health), and complicates house training since you cannot predict when they will need to relieve themselves.
