Minecraft Dimension FAQ

To convert Nether coordinates to Overworld, multiply the X and Z values by 8. The Y (height) coordinate stays the same. For example, Nether coordinates (100, 64, 200) become Overworld coordinates (800, 64, 1600). This is because one block in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld.

The ratio between the Nether and Overworld is 1:8. This means every block you travel in the Nether equals eight blocks in the Overworld. This horizontal scaling applies only to X and Z coordinates — the Y (vertical) coordinate remains unchanged between dimensions.

To link two portals, build your Overworld portal at your desired location, then travel through to the Nether. From the Nether side, divide your Overworld X and Z coordinates by 8 to find the corresponding Nether position. Build a new portal there, and the two will be permanently linked. Ensure portals are within 128 blocks (Nether) of each other to avoid mismatching.

Portals link based on coordinate matching within a 128-block radius in the Nether (or 1024 blocks in the Overworld). If multiple portals exist nearby, the game may connect to the wrong one. To fix this, destroy the mismatched portal and rebuild it at the exact calculated coordinates (Overworld X,Z ÷ 8 = Nether X,Z). Using obsidian to mark the spot helps ensure accuracy.

No, the Y (vertical) coordinate stays exactly the same when travelling between the Nether and Overworld. If you enter a portal at Y=64, you will exit at approximately Y=64 in the other dimension. However, the Nether’s build height limit is 128 blocks (256 in newer versions), so very high Overworld portals may spawn you lower in the Nether.
