Mileage Calculator FAQ
Everything you need to know about calculating fuel costs, MPG, and HMRC mileage claims in the UK.
To calculate the fuel cost of a journey, divide your distance (in miles) by your vehicle’s MPG to find the gallons used. Multiply by 4.546 to convert to litres, then multiply by your fuel price per litre. Alternatively, use our free mileage calculator above to do this instantly.
For cars and vans, the HMRC Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAP) are 45p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year, and 25p per mile for every mile over 10,000. Motorcycles are 24p per mile, and bicycles are 20p per mile. These rates are tax-free if paid by your employer.
To convert UK MPG to litres per 100km (L/100km), divide 282.48 by your MPG figure. For example, 40 MPG is 282.48 ÷ 40 = 7.06 L/100km. Note that UK MPG is different from US MPG; this formula applies only to the UK Imperial gallon (4.546 litres).
Yes, if you work from home and it is not your choice (e.g., your employer requires it or you have no permanent office), your home is considered a permanent workplace. You can claim mileage for journeys to temporary workplaces, client sites, or other business-related trips, but not for your normal commute to a permanent workplace.
Actual fuel cost only covers the petrol or diesel you use. HMRC mileage allowance (AMAP) is a tax-free payment that covers fuel, wear and tear, insurance, road tax, and depreciation. You can claim AMAP from your employer, or claim tax relief on the difference if your employer pays you less than the HMRC approved rates.
Yes. If you are claiming mileage allowance from your employer or claiming tax relief from HMRC, you must keep a detailed mileage log. This should include the date of each journey, the destination, the business purpose, and the number of miles driven. HMRC may request this log to verify your claim.
