UK shirt sizes are usually measured by collar (neck) size in inches, while EU sizes use centimetres. To convert, multiply your UK collar size in inches by 2.54 to get the raw centimetre figure, then round to the nearest EU collar size, which is typically sold in whole or half sizes such as 37, 38, 39, 41 and 42.
UK and US men’s shirt sizing are almost identical, both commonly using collar size in inches or letter sizes (S, M, L, XL). EU sizing instead uses collar size in centimetres, so a UK 15.5 inch collar becomes roughly a EU 39-40, and letter sizes can also shift slightly between UK and continental brands.
For formal and dress shirts, collar (neck) measurement is the most accurate way to find your size, since collars are cut precisely. For casual shirts, t-shirts and polos, chest measurement is usually more reliable, as these are fitted to overall body width rather than collar.
