Times Tables FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about times tables, multiplication practice, and learning multiplication facts.

A times table (or multiplication table) is a list showing the results of multiplying a number by a sequence of other numbers, usually 1 through 12. For example, the 5 times table shows 5×1=5, 5×2=10, 5×3=15, and so on.

In England, pupils are generally expected to know all times tables up to 12×12 by the end of Year 4, and this is formally checked through the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). Building fluency earlier, from Year 2 onward, makes this milestone easier to reach.

Most learners find it easiest to start with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables since they follow simple patterns, then move on to the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Regular short practice, spotting patterns, and using a times table chart for reference all help build recall over time.

Yes. For any number multiplied by 9 (from 1 to 10), the digits of the answer always add up to 9, and the tens digit is always one less than the number you multiplied. For example, 9×7=63, and 6+3=9, while 7 minus one is 6.
