To calculate the time difference between two dates, you subtract the start date from the end date. Our calculator does this instantly by converting both dates into milliseconds since the Unix epoch, finding the difference, and then converting that result into years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. You can also calculate total days or total hours by dividing the millisecond difference by the number of milliseconds in a day (86,400,000) or an hour (3,600,000).

A standard calendar year has 365 days. However, because it takes the Earth approximately 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun, we add an extra day (February 29th) almost every four years. This is called a leap year, which has 366 days. For precise long-term calculations, the average length of a year is considered to be 365.25 days.

Yes, our time difference calculator automatically accounts for leap years. Because it uses the actual calendar dates and the native JavaScript Date object, it knows exactly how many days are in each specific month and year, including the 29 days in February during a leap year. This ensures your total days, hours, and minutes are 100% accurate.

Business days typically exclude weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) and public holidays. To calculate business days, you count the total number of weekdays between your start and end dates. Our calculator provides the total calendar days; to estimate business days, you can subtract the number of weekends that fall within that period (roughly 2/7ths of the total days). For exact business days, you would need to manually deduct any UK bank holidays that fall within the timeframe.

The number of hours in a month varies depending on the month. A 31-day month has 744 hours, a 30-day month has 720 hours, and February has 672 hours (or 696 hours in a leap year). On average, across a full year, a month is considered to have about 730.5 hours.

Yes, but you must first convert both times to the same time zone (usually UTC) before entering them into the calculator. For example, if an event starts at 9:00 AM in New York (EST) and ends at 5:00 PM in London (GMT), you should convert the New York time to GMT (2:00 PM GMT) and then calculate the difference between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, which is 3 hours.
