Time Math & Conversions FAQ
Everything you need to know about adding time, converting minutes to hours, and calculating durations.
To add time together, add the hours, minutes, and seconds separately. First, add the seconds. If the total is 60 or more, divide by 60; the remainder is the new seconds, and the quotient is added to the minutes. Next, add the minutes. If the total is 60 or more, divide by 60; the remainder is the new minutes, and the quotient is added to the hours. Finally, add the hours together.
To convert minutes to hours and minutes, divide the total number of minutes by 60. The whole number result is the hours, and the remainder is the minutes. For example, 150 minutes divided by 60 is 2 with a remainder of 30, which equals 2 hours and 30 minutes.
1.5 hours is equal to 1 hour and 30 minutes. The whole number ‘1’ represents the hour, and the decimal ‘0.5’ represents half of an hour, which is 30 minutes (0.5 × 60 = 30).
To calculate time duration between two points in time, subtract the start time from the end time. If you are calculating across different days, convert both times to a 24-hour format or total seconds, subtract the start time from the end time, and then convert the result back into hours and minutes.
There are 3,600 seconds in an hour. This is calculated by multiplying the number of minutes in an hour (60) by the number of seconds in a minute (60): 60 × 60 = 3,600.
100 minutes is equal to 1 hour and 40 minutes. Since there are 60 minutes in an hour, 100 divided by 60 is 1 with a remainder of 40. In decimal format, 100 minutes is approximately 1.67 hours.
In Excel, you can add hours and minutes by simply using the addition operator (+). Ensure your cells are formatted as Time (e.g., [h]:mm to display hours over 24). For example, if A1 is 2:30 and B1 is 1:45, the formula =A1+B1 will result in 4:15. If the total exceeds 24 hours, use the custom format [h]:mm to prevent it from resetting to 0.
To convert decimal hours to hours and minutes, keep the whole number as the hours. Then, take the decimal portion and multiply it by 60 to get the minutes. For example, 3.75 hours: the whole number is 3 hours. The decimal 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. So, 3.75 hours is 3 hours and 45 minutes.
