Temperature Conversion FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about converting temperatures between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin.
Multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 (or 1.8) and add 32. The formula is °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. For example, 25°C × 1.8 = 45, plus 32 = 77°F.
Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5/9. The formula is °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. For example, 98.6°F − 32 = 66.6, × 5/9 = 37°C.
Add 273.15 to the Celsius temperature. The formula is K = °C + 273.15. Kelvin uses the same size of degree as Celsius, so only the starting point differs. Kelvin is written without a degree symbol.
Absolute zero is the lowest possible temperature, where particles have minimal thermal motion. It equals 0 K, −273.15°C or −459.67°F. Nothing can be cooled below this point, so this converter rejects values beneath it.
The two scales meet at −40. That means −40°C is exactly the same temperature as −40°F.
