Teaspoon to mL FAQ

Everything home cooks and bakers ask about converting teaspoons to milliliters.

A US teaspoon equals 4.92892 mL, which is almost always rounded to 5 mL for cooking and nutrition labeling. A UK/Imperial teaspoon is slightly larger at 5.91939 mL, while the Metric and Australian teaspoon are both exactly 5 mL.

Not exactly, but it’s close enough for almost all cooking purposes. A US teaspoon is technically 4.92892 mL, rounded to 5 mL on nutrition labels and most recipes. Metric and Australian teaspoons are defined as exactly 5 mL, while the older UK Imperial teaspoon is 5.91939 mL.

In the US, UK and Metric systems, 1 tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons. Australia is the exception: an Australian tablespoon equals 4 teaspoons (20 mL) instead of 3, which can throw off recipe conversions if you’re not careful.

Historically, spoon measurements were based on physical household spoons rather than a single international standard, so US, UK/Imperial, and Australian systems each rounded differently when metric equivalents were assigned. Modern Metric and Australian teaspoons were standardized at 5 mL, while the US teaspoon derives from the US customary fluid ounce and the UK Imperial teaspoon derives from the Imperial fluid ounce.

A US cup contains 48 US teaspoons (about 236.6 mL total). A Metric cup, used in Australia, is typically defined as 250 mL, which works out to 50 Metric teaspoons.

For most everyday cooking, the small gap between a US teaspoon (4.93 mL) and a Metric teaspoon (5 mL) is negligible. It matters more in baking, where precise leavening agents like baking soda or yeast are sensitive to quantity, and especially in medicine dosing, where using a kitchen spoon instead of a proper measuring device can lead to meaningful under- or over-dosing.

A standard metal or plastic kitchen teaspoon is close enough to 5 mL for most everyday recipes, but for baking or medicine it’s best to use a calibrated measuring spoon or a small liquid measuring cup with mL markings, since kitchen “teaspoons” used as cutlery vary in actual volume far more than labeled measuring spoons do.
