Tax Inclusive vs Exclusive Estimator
The same number gives different totals depending on whether tax is included.
Understanding The Two Methods
Key concepts for tax and pricing
Tax Inclusive
The displayed price already contains tax. Net price = price ÷ (1 + rate). Tax = price − net.
Tax Exclusive
Tax is added at checkout. Total = price × (1 + rate). Tax = price × rate.
Why It Differs
A 20% tax-inclusive price contains only 16.67% tax, because the base for the tax is the net price.
Who Uses What
UK consumers usually see tax-inclusive prices, while US prices usually exclude sales tax.

Tax Inclusive vs Calculator FAQ
Answers to common questions about this calculator.
Tax inclusive prices already contain tax, while tax exclusive prices add tax on top at the point of sale.
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate, for example by 1.2 for 20% VAT.
Because VAT is calculated on the net price. On £120 gross, VAT is £20, which is one sixth, or 16.67%.
Consumer-facing prices are usually tax-inclusive, while business-to-business quotes are often tax-exclusive.
