Student Loan FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about UK student finance, repayment thresholds, and loan write-offs.
The UK has several student loan plans: Plan 1 (pre-2012 England/Wales and Northern Ireland), Plan 2 (post-2012 England/Wales), Plan 4 (Scottish students), and Plan 5 (post-2023 England/Wales). There is also a separate Postgraduate Master’s or Doctoral Loan.
Repayments are calculated as a percentage of your income *above* the threshold for your specific loan plan. For most undergraduate loans, this is 9% of the amount earned over the threshold. Postgraduate loans are 6% over their specific £21,000 threshold.
No. If your income falls below the repayment threshold for your loan plan, your monthly student loan deductions will automatically stop. You will only resume repayments when your income rises above the threshold again.
The write-off period depends on your plan. Plan 1 is written off at age 65. Plan 2 is written off 30 years after the April you were first due to repay. Plan 4 is written off 30 years after graduation. Plan 5 is written off 40 years after the April you were first due to repay.
