Square Metres Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating area, from basic formulas to UK-specific unit conversions.

To calculate square metres (m²), multiply the length by the width of a rectangular area, with both measurements taken in metres. For example, a room that is 4 metres long and 3 metres wide has an area of 4 × 3 = 12 m². For other shapes, different formulas apply: triangles use ½ × base × height, and circles use π × r².

One square metre equals approximately 10.764 square feet. To convert from square metres to square feet, multiply by 10.764. To convert from square feet to square metres, divide by 10.764 (or multiply by 0.0929). This conversion is commonly used in UK property listings and flooring calculations.

The average UK bedroom is approximately 7.6 m² (82 sq ft), while the average living room is around 16.3 m² (175 sq ft). A standard UK bathroom is roughly 4 m² (43 sq ft), and a typical single garage is about 16 m² (172 sq ft). These measurements are useful benchmarks when planning renovations or buying flooring.

First, convert feet and inches to metres. One foot equals 0.3048 metres, and one inch equals 0.0254 metres. For example, a room measuring 12 feet 6 inches by 10 feet would be: (12.5 × 0.3048) × (10 × 0.3048) = 3.81 m × 3.048 m = 11.61 m². Alternatively, calculate in square feet first, then divide by 10.764 to get square metres.

One acre equals exactly 4,046.86 square metres (or approximately 4,047 m²). An acre is a common unit for measuring land in the UK, particularly for gardens, allotments, and agricultural land. One hectare equals 10,000 m², which is approximately 2.47 acres.
