How it Works
Understanding your retirement age
Your Date of Birth
Your State Pension age is set entirely by the year and month you were born, under rules passed by successive UK governments.
Matching an Age Band
We compare your date of birth against the legislated age bands — 66, 67, or 68 — to find which one applies to you.
Calculating Your Date
We add your State Pension age to your date of birth to estimate the calendar date you’ll reach retirement age.
Time Remaining
We work out the years and months between today and that date, so you know exactly how far off it is.

Retirement Age FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the UK State Pension age and retirement planning.
The State Pension age is currently 66 for both men and women. It is legislated to rise to 67 between 2026 and 2028, and then to 68 between 2044 and 2046, though the exact timing depends on your date of birth.
Not necessarily. The State Pension age is simply the earliest point you can start claiming the State Pension. You can retire earlier or later than this if you have a workplace or private pension, but you usually cannot draw the State Pension itself before you reach it.
Yes. This calculator gives an estimate based on legislated age bands, but the UK Government’s own State Pension age tool on gov.uk gives you the exact date based on your date of birth and is the definitive source.
Generally you need 35 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions or credits to receive the full new State Pension, and at least 10 years to receive any State Pension at all. You can check your National Insurance record and forecast through your Personal Tax Account.
