Resolution & Display FAQ

Everything you need to know about screen resolutions, pixel density, and aspect ratios for your digital devices.

Screen resolution is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed on a screen or digital image. It is typically expressed as width × height (e.g., 1920 × 1080), where the first number is the horizontal pixels and the second is the vertical pixels. Higher resolutions mean more pixels, resulting in a sharper and more detailed image.

PPI is calculated by dividing the diagonal resolution in pixels by the diagonal screen size in inches. First, use the Pythagorean theorem to find the diagonal resolution: √(width² + height²). Then, divide that number by the physical diagonal size of the screen in inches. A higher PPI means the pixels are denser and the image appears sharper to the human eye.

1080p (Full HD) has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, totaling about 2.07 million pixels. 4K (UHD) has a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels, totaling about 8.29 million pixels. This means 4K has exactly four times as many pixels as 1080p, resulting in significantly more detail, sharper text, and smoother images, especially on larger screens.

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image or screen. It is calculated by dividing both the width and the height by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, for 1920 × 1080, the GCD is 120. Dividing both by 120 gives an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is the standard widescreen format.

A megapixel is equal to one million pixels. It is commonly used to describe the resolution of digital cameras and smartphone sensors. For example, a camera that captures images at 4000 × 3000 pixels has a total of 12,000,000 pixels, which is equivalent to 12 megapixels (MP). More megapixels generally allow for larger prints and more cropping flexibility.
