Panelling Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating wall panel quantities, coverage, and waste allowances.

To calculate how many wall panels you need, divide the total wall area by the area of a single panel. Add a waste allowance of around 5 to 10 percent to account for cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching, then round the result up to the nearest whole panel.

A waste allowance of 5 to 10 percent is typical for straightforward rectangular walls. For rooms with many windows, doors, alcoves, or complex cuts, a waste allowance of 10 to 15 percent is generally recommended to avoid running short of panels.

For a quick estimate, many installers calculate the full wall area and let the waste allowance absorb small openings such as doors and windows, since cut-offs can often be reused elsewhere. For large openings, it is more accurate to subtract their area directly from the total before calculating panels needed.

Common wall panel sizes include 2440mm x 1220mm (8ft x 4ft) sheet panels, as well as narrower slat or tongue-and-groove panels typically ranging from 200mm to 600mm wide. Always check the exact dimensions of the specific panel product you plan to use.

Yes. Running panels horizontally versus vertically can change how many full panels fit a wall and how much offcut is produced. For walls that are not a clean multiple of the panel dimension, switching orientation can sometimes reduce the number of panels and waste required.

Multiply the area of one wall by the number of identical walls being panelled, or sum the individual areas of each wall if they differ in size. Add your chosen waste allowance to the combined total before dividing by the panel area to find the total number of panels required.
