💡 Pro Tip: National Insurance rates were reduced from 10% to 8% for the main rate band starting 6 January 2024. This calculator reflects the updated 8% main rate and 2% additional rate for the full 2024/2025 tax year.
What it funds: NI contributions build your entitlement to the State Pension, Maternity Allowance, and contributory employment and support allowance.
Class 1 vs Class 4: Employees pay Class 1 NI (calculated here). Self-employed individuals pay Class 4 NI on their profits, which follows a similar threshold structure.
Multiple Jobs: If you have multiple jobs, you may have a Primary Threshold applied to each, but you can apply to HMRC to combine them if you are overpaying.
State Pension Age: You stop paying Class 1 and Class 4 National Insurance once you reach the UK State Pension age, even if you continue working.
⚠️ Note on Accuracy: This calculator provides an estimate for standard employed (Class 1) earnings. It does not account for salary sacrifice schemes (like pensions), which can lower your NI liability.

Understanding NI Calculation

National Insurance is not a flat tax. It is calculated in bands, meaning you only pay NI on the money you earn above a specific threshold. Here is how the math works.

1

The Primary Threshold (0%)

You pay 0% National Insurance on all earnings up to the Primary Threshold. For the 2024/2025 tax year, this is aligned with the Personal Allowance at £12,570 per year.

2

The Main Rate Band (8%)

For earnings between the Primary Threshold (£12,570) and the Upper Earnings Limit (£50,270), you pay the main rate of 8% on the amount that falls within this band.

3

The Additional Rate Band (2%)

Any earnings above the Upper Earnings Limit (£50,270) are taxed at the reduced additional rate of 2%. This ensures higher earners continue to contribute, but at a lower marginal rate.

4

Employer Contributions

Remember that your employer also pays secondary Class 1 NI (13.8% on earnings above £9,100). This is a cost to them and is not deducted from your gross salary.

National Insurance FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about UK National Insurance, thresholds, and state benefits.

National Insurance (NI) is a tax paid by employees, employers, and the self-employed in the UK. The contributions fund state benefits, including the State Pension, maternity allowance, and contributory employment and support allowance.

For the 2024/2025 tax year, the Primary Threshold (where you start paying NI) is £12,570 per year. The Upper Earnings Limit is £50,270 per year. Earnings between these thresholds are taxed at 8%, and earnings above £50,270 are taxed at 2%.

No. If your annual earnings are below the Primary Threshold of £12,570, you do not have to pay any Class 1 National Insurance Contributions, though the year may still count towards your State Pension record if you receive certain benefits.

For employed individuals, Class 1 National Insurance is automatically deducted from your gross salary by your employer through the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) system before you receive your net pay.

You stop paying Class 1 and Class 4 National Insurance contributions from the exact date you reach the UK State Pension age, even if you choose to continue working and earning a salary.
