Understanding Lean Body Mass

Lean Body Mass (LBM) is your total body weight minus your body fat. It’s a more meaningful number than weight alone, because it reflects how much of you is muscle, bone, organs and water — the tissue that drives your metabolism.

How Lean Body Mass Is Calculated

The three most widely used LBM formulas

1

The Boer Formula

Widely regarded as one of the most reliable estimates for the general adult population. It uses height and weight, with separate equations for men and women.

Men: LBM = 0.407 × weight(kg) + 0.267 × height(cm) − 19.2
Women: LBM = 0.252 × weight(kg) + 0.473 × height(cm) − 48.3
2

The Hume Formula

An alternative equation that produces results close to the Boer formula and is commonly used in clinical dosing calculations.

Men: LBM = 0.3281 × weight(kg) + 0.33929 × height(cm) − 29.5336
Women: LBM = 0.29569 × weight(kg) + 0.41813 × height(cm) − 43.2933
3

The James Formula

An older formula that tends to be less accurate at higher body weights but is still referenced in some fitness tools.

Men: LBM = 1.10 × weight(kg) − 128 × (weight/height)²
Women: LBM = 1.07 × weight(kg) − 148 × (weight/height)²
4

From LBM to Body Fat Percentage

Once you have your LBM, you can work out fat mass and body fat percentage: Fat Mass = Total Weight − LBM, and Body Fat % = (Fat Mass ÷ Total Weight) × 100.

⚠️ Important Note: Formula-based LBM is an estimate, not a diagnosis. Factors like very high muscle mass, pregnancy, or an unusually high or low body fat percentage can reduce accuracy. For a precise reading, a DEXA scan, hydrostatic weighing, or a calibrated bioelectrical impedance device is recommended.
What it includes: Muscle, bone, organs, skin, and body water — everything except fat.
Typical range: LBM usually makes up 70-90% of total body weight in healthy adults.
Inputs needed: Sex, height and total body weight are enough for a formula-based estimate.
Why it matters: LBM drives resting metabolic rate, so it’s used to set calorie and protein targets.
Best use: Track LBM as a trend over weeks and months rather than judging a single reading.
💡 Pro Tip: Protein needs scale better with lean body mass than with total body weight. A common guideline is 1.6-2.2g of protein per kg of LBM for those doing regular resistance training.

How to Calculate Your Lean Body Mass

You only need a few basic measurements to get a useful LBM estimate. Follow these steps for the most accurate result you can get without specialist equipment.

1

Take Accurate Measurements

Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking, for consistency. Measure your height without shoes, standing straight against a flat wall.

2

Choose a Formula

Use the Boer formula for a balanced, general-purpose estimate. If you’re comparing against clinical or medical dosing references, the Hume formula is often the standard used.

3

Calculate and Record the Result

Plug your height, weight and sex into the formula to get your LBM in kilograms or pounds. Write the number down along with the date so you can track changes over time.

4

Re-check Every Few Weeks

LBM changes slowly. Re-measure every 2-4 weeks rather than daily, and look at the overall trend rather than any single reading, since normal water fluctuations can shift the number slightly.

Comparing LBM Formulas

A side-by-side summary of the most common formulas used to estimate Lean Body Mass.

Formula Inputs Required Best Used For
BoerHeight, weight, sexGeneral-purpose estimate for most adults.
HumeHeight, weight, sexCommonly referenced in clinical and dosing contexts.
JamesHeight, weight, sexSimple estimate, less reliable at higher body weights.
Bioelectrical Impedance (BIA)Electrical resistance via deviceConvenient home tracking with moderate accuracy.
DEXA ScanSpecialist imaging equipmentClinical-grade accuracy, not needed for routine tracking.

Lean Body Mass FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about calculating and using Lean Body Mass.

Lean Body Mass is the total weight of your body minus body fat. It includes the weight of your muscles, bones, organs, skin, and the water contained in your body. It is sometimes called fat-free mass.

For most adults, lean body mass typically makes up 70-90% of total body weight, with the remainder being body fat. The exact healthy range varies by sex, age, and activity level, so LBM is best tracked as a personal trend over time rather than compared to a single universal target.

No formula-based estimate is as accurate as direct measurement methods like DEXA scans or bioelectrical impedance devices. Among the formulas, the Boer formula is generally considered one of the more reliable estimates for the general population, while the Hume and James formulas are also widely used and tend to produce similar results.

Lean Body Mass is expressed as a weight (e.g. kg or lbs) and represents everything in your body that is not fat. Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total weight that is fat. The two figures are complementary: LBM plus fat mass equals total body weight.
