An International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is a standardised account identifier defined by ISO 13616. It combines a two-letter country code, two check digits, and a country-specific Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN) containing the bank code, branch code, and account number. The two check digits let banks detect mistyped or corrupted IBANs before a payment is sent, using the ISO 7064 mod-97-10 algorithm.
The BBAN, country code, and a placeholder “00” are rearranged so the country code and placeholder move to the end. Every letter is converted to a number (A=10 up to Z=35), and the resulting numeric string is reduced modulo 97. The check digits are 98 minus that remainder, always written as two digits.
Move the first four characters (country code and check digits) to the end of the IBAN, convert all letters to numbers, and compute the value modulo 97. If the remainder equals 1, the IBAN passes the checksum test. This confirms the IBAN is internally consistent, but it does not confirm the account actually exists at the bank.
No. IBAN is mandatory across the European Union, the wider SEPA area, and adopted by many countries in the Middle East, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, but several major economies — including the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and China — do not issue IBANs and instead use routing numbers, sort codes, SWIFT/BIC codes, or local account number formats for domestic and international transfers.
No. A passing mod-97 checksum only proves the IBAN is correctly formatted and internally consistent — it cannot confirm the account is open, active, or belongs to a particular person. Banks still perform their own account-verification checks, such as a Confirmation of Payee match, before processing a transfer.
The BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number) is the domestic part of the account identifier — the bank code, branch code, and account number, formatted according to each country’s own rules. The IBAN wraps the BBAN with a two-letter country code and two check digits at the front, making it usable for international payments.
