Standard Worming Interval Guide

Typical recommended intervals by horse category, for quick reference when planning a parasite control programme.

Horse Category Recommended Interval Preferred Method Notes

Weanling / Yearling8 weeksInterval or FECHigher natural worm burden risk
Adult, low risk10 – 12 weeksFEC-basedTest and treat only if egg count is high
Adult, high risk grazing8 – 10 weeksFEC-basedShared grazing raises reinfection risk
Senior (over 15 years)8 – 10 weeksFEC-basedWeaker immunity warrants closer monitoring

Always confirm your worming programme with your vet or a suitably qualified person (SQP), and use faecal egg counts where possible to avoid unnecessary treatment and reduce wormer resistance.

Horse Worming FAQ

Everything you need to know about planning an effective equine worming schedule.

Most adult horses on a faecal-egg-count-based programme are tested every 8 to 12 weeks, with treatment only given when egg counts are high. Horses on a fixed interval dosing programme are typically wormed every 8 to 13 weeks, depending on the product used and grazing risk.

No, worming needs vary by age, grazing environment and individual risk. Foals, weanlings and senior horses generally need more frequent attention due to weaker immunity, while horses on low-risk, well-managed pasture with small group sizes can often be treated less frequently.

A faecal egg count (FEC) is a laboratory test that measures the number of worm eggs in a horse’s droppings. It helps identify which horses actually need worming, reducing unnecessary treatments and helping to slow the development of wormer resistance.

Most equine vets now recommend a faecal-egg-count-based approach for adult horses, treating only when needed, combined with a strategic tapeworm and encysted small redworm treatment once or twice a year. Fixed interval dosing is simpler but can contribute to wormer resistance if used indiscriminately.
