These are the tiered member contribution rates applied to actual annual pensionable pay, effective from 1 April 2025. GPs are assessed on their full certified pensionable pay rather than a whole-time equivalent figure.

GP Pensionable Pay FAQ

Everything you need to know about how GP pensionable pay drives your NHS Pension Scheme contributions and growth.

For GP partners and salaried GPs, pensionable pay is broadly your NHS income after allowable business expenses, including profit share from GMS/PMS contracts, seniority payments, and some out-of-hours and appraisal work, less any non-pensionable items. It excludes private income and is certified annually via Type 1, Type 2 or Type 9 certificates.

Your contribution tier is based on your actual annual pensionable pay for the scheme year, not your whole-time equivalent salary. GPs are assessed on their certified total pensionable pay, and the relevant tier rate is applied to that full amount, unlike some other NHS staff whose part-time pay is annualised first.

From 1 April 2025 the tiers are: up to £13,259 at 5.2%, £13,260 to £27,797 at 6.5%, £27,798 to £33,868 at 8.3%, £33,869 to £50,845 at 9.8%, £50,846 to £65,190 at 10.7%, and £65,191 and above at 12.5%. Tier ranges are reviewed each April in line with CPI.

In the 2015 NHS Pension Scheme, a GP builds up a pension of 1/54th of their pensionable pay each scheme year, added to their career average pot and revalued annually in line with CPI plus 1.5%. GPs with earlier 1995 or 2008 Section service may also have legacy final-salary benefits calculated differently.

Yes. NHS Pension contributions receive income tax relief at your marginal rate, so a higher-rate taxpayer effectively pays a lower net cost than the headline contribution percentage. This calculator estimates that net cost alongside the gross contribution figure.
