Fraction Calculator FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about working with fractions.
To add fractions with different denominators, first find a common denominator, usually the lowest common multiple of the two denominators. Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with that common denominator, then add the numerators and keep the denominator the same.
To simplify a fraction, find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by that number. The result is the fraction in its lowest terms, meaning the numerator and denominator share no common factor other than 1.
To divide one fraction by another, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second, meaning you flip the second fraction’s numerator and denominator and then multiply straight across before simplifying the result.
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole number part of the answer becomes the whole number of the mixed number, and the remainder becomes the new numerator over the original denominator.
