Foreign Exchange FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about currency conversion and exchange rates.
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices of two currencies on the global currency markets. It’s the rate you see quoted on financial news sites and is generally the best rate available, before any margin or fee is added by a bank, card provider or currency broker.
Most banks, card providers and airport bureaux de change build a margin into the exchange rate they offer, rather than charging a separate fee. This margin is typically anywhere from under 1% with specialist providers to 5% or more with some banks and airport kiosks, and it’s how they cover costs and make a profit on the conversion.
Major currency pairs trade continuously on global markets and rates can move every few seconds during trading hours. Day-to-day moves of a few tenths of a percent are common, while unusual economic or political news can move rates by several percent within a single day.
Compare the rate you’re offered against the current mid-market rate to see the real margin being charged, rather than looking at any advertised ‘zero fee’ headline alone. Specialist currency transfer services and some fee-free travel cards generally offer margins much closer to the mid-market rate than high-street banks or airport bureaux de change.
