Most installers recommend adding 5-10% extra for straightforward rectangular rooms, and 10-15% for rooms with lots of alcoves, diagonal cuts, or a herringbone/diagonal laying pattern. Buying slightly extra also gives you spare material for future repairs from the same batch and dye lot.
Laminate, engineered wood, vinyl, and carpet almost always need underlay for cushioning, insulation, and sound reduction, unless it’s a click product with underlay pre-attached. Solid hardwood and ceramic tile are typically fixed directly to the subfloor with adhesive rather than underlay.
This calculator estimates material, underlay/adhesive, and fixings costs only. Professional fitting typically adds £15-£35 per square metre depending on flooring type and region, so get a written quote from a fitter for an accurate all-in price.
This calculator multiplies length by width for a simple rectangular room. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, split the space into rectangles, calculate each area separately, and add them together before entering the combined total as your room dimensions.
