Excess Mileage Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about excess mileage charges on UK car leases, PCP finance, and contract hire agreements.

An excess mileage charge is a fee applied by a car leasing, PCP finance, or contract hire company when you drive more miles than your agreed mileage allowance. The charge is calculated using a pre-agreed pence-per-mile rate set out in your finance or lease agreement.

To calculate an excess mileage charge, subtract your agreed mileage allowance from your actual mileage to find the excess miles, then multiply that figure by the pence-per-mile rate stated in your agreement. For example, 2,000 excess miles at 9p per mile equals a charge of £180.

Excess mileage rates in the UK typically range from 3p to 20p per mile, depending on the vehicle type, finance company, and original contract terms. Petrol and diesel cars are often between 6p and 9p per mile, while electric and premium vehicles can be higher.

In some cases, finance and leasing companies will allow you to top up or adjust your mileage allowance before the end of the agreement, often at a lower rate than the standard excess mileage charge. It is worth contacting your provider as early as possible if you expect to exceed your allowance.

This depends on your specific agreement. Some PCP and leasing contracts offer a partial refund or reduced final payment for unused mileage, while others do not refund anything for miles not driven. Check your finance agreement for details.

Business contract hire excess mileage charges are usually quoted plus VAT, while personal contract hire and PCP charges are usually quoted inclusive of VAT. Always check your agreement or ask your provider to confirm whether the pence-per-mile rate you were given includes VAT.
