Adjustment tips for your trip

    Insight text will appear here.
💡 Travel Tip: The same number of time zones takes noticeably longer to recover from when you fly east. If you have a choice, schedule important meetings or events a day or two after arrival, and plan extra recovery time for eastward trips.
⚠️ Estimates only: This calculator gives a general planning estimate based on common rules of thumb. Real recovery depends on sleep, light exposure, health and flight schedule. If you have a medical condition, take medication or are considering sleep aids such as melatonin, speak to a doctor or pharmacist first.
    1

    The Body Clock Runs Long

Your internal clock runs slightly longer than 24 hours, so it drifts later by default. That makes it easier to stay up late than to fall asleep early.

    2

    Flying East Shortens Your Day

Travelling east means local bedtime arrives earlier than your body expects. Your clock must advance, which is the slower and harder direction. Expect roughly one day per time zone.

    3

    Flying West Lengthens Your Day

Travelling west gives you a longer day, so your clock only needs to be delayed. This matches its natural drift and usually takes about two thirds of a day per time zone.

    4

    Light Is the Main Signal

Timed light exposure is the strongest tool for resetting your clock. Morning light moves it earlier, evening light moves it later, so the right timing depends on your direction.

Eastward vs Westward Jet Lag FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about flying east versus west and recovering from jet lag.

The human body clock runs on a cycle slightly longer than 24 hours, which makes it easier to stay up later than to fall asleep earlier. Flying west lengthens your day, so it matches the natural drift of your body clock. Flying east shortens your day and forces your body to sleep earlier than it wants to, which takes longer to adjust to.

A common rule of thumb is about one day of recovery per time zone crossed when flying east, and roughly two thirds of a day per time zone when flying west. Age, sleep habits, light exposure and how rested you were before the flight all change the real figure.

Most people start to notice jet lag symptoms after crossing two or three time zones. Crossing one or two zones usually causes little or no disruption, while six or more zones commonly causes noticeable tiredness, poor sleep and reduced concentration.

Start going to bed and getting up earlier for a few days before you travel, get bright light in the morning at your destination, avoid bright light in the evening, and set your watch to destination time as soon as you board. Short naps of 20 to 30 minutes can help, but long daytime sleeps make adjustment slower.

Older travellers often take longer to adjust because the body clock becomes less flexible with age, and sleep tends to be lighter. Younger adults usually recover a little faster, although poor sleep before the flight can slow recovery at any age.

Some travellers use melatonin at the right time to help shift their body clock, but the timing and dose matter and it is not suitable for everyone. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before using it, especially if you take other medication or have a medical condition.
