Driving Time Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about estimating journey durations and planning your travel time.

Driving time is calculated by dividing the total distance by your average speed. To get a realistic estimate, the calculator also adds time for planned stops (like fuel or rest breaks) and factors in potential traffic or weather delays as a percentage.

Yes, you can input a ‘Traffic/Weather Delay’ percentage. For example, adding a 15% delay will increase your pure driving time by 15% to account for typical congestion, roadworks, or slower-than-ideal conditions.

For a mixed journey involving motorways and A-roads, an average speed of 55-60 mph is generally realistic. For predominantly urban journeys, 30-40 mph is more accurate, while pure motorway driving might average 65-70 mph.

The calculator takes your specified departure time and adds the total journey time (pure driving time + stop time + delay time) to determine your estimated time of arrival (ETA). If the journey crosses midnight, it will indicate ‘Next Day’.
