How to Measure Accurately

Use the Right Tool
Use a flexible, non-stretch tailor’s measuring tape. Stand naturally in front of a mirror, wearing form-fitting undergarments or light clothing.
Measure the Bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, ensuring it passes under your arms and across your shoulder blades. Keep the tape parallel to the floor.
Measure the Waist
Find the narrowest part of your torso, typically just above your belly button. Breathe out naturally and measure without sucking in your stomach.
Measure the Hips
Stand with your feet together. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks, usually about 20 cm (8 inches) below your natural waist.

Use a flexible measuring tape. For the bust, measure around the fullest part. For the waist, measure around the narrowest part (usually just above the belly button). For the hips, measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and snug, but not tight.
This is very common, especially for pear or apple body shapes. The general rule is to choose the size that corresponds to your largest measurement to ensure the garment will fit comfortably. You can then have a tailor easily take in the areas that are too loose, which is much simpler than letting out a garment that is too tight.
This is due to ‘vanity sizing’ and the lack of a single, legally enforced global sizing standard. Brands create their own size charts based on their target demographic, country of manufacture, and fit models. Always check the specific brand’s size guide before purchasing.
As a general rule, a US dress size is approximately 4 sizes smaller than a UK size (e.g., UK 12 is a US 8). An EU dress size is approximately 28 sizes larger than a UK size (e.g., UK 12 is an EU 40). However, always verify with the specific retailer’s conversion chart, as exceptions exist.
It is almost always safer to size up. A garment that is slightly too large can be altered by a tailor to fit perfectly. A garment that is too small cannot easily be let out due to limited seam allowance, and it will be uncomfortable to wear.
