How Dividend Investing Works
Dividends are a portion of a company’s earnings distributed to shareholders. Understanding the key metrics helps you build a reliable passive income stream.
Dividend Yield
This percentage shows the annual return on investment from dividends alone, relative to the share price. A higher yield indicates more income per pound invested, though exceptionally high yields can sometimes signal risk.
Dividend Reinvestment
Reinvesting your dividends to buy more shares (often via a DRIP) harnesses the power of compound interest, accelerating the growth of both your share count and future dividend payments over time.
Dividend Cover & Safety
Always check a company’s dividend cover (Earnings Per Share divided by Dividend Per Share). A cover of 2x or higher generally indicates the dividend is well-supported by company profits and sustainable.

Dividend Investing FAQ
Everything you need to know about calculating and receiving share dividends in the UK.
To calculate your total dividend income, multiply the number of shares you own by the annual dividend per share. For example, if you own 100 shares and the company pays £0.50 per share, your annual dividend income is £50.
Dividend yield is a financial ratio that shows how much a company pays out in dividends each year relative to its share price. It is calculated by dividing the annual dividend per share by the current share price, then multiplying by 100 to get a percentage.
In the UK, most companies pay dividends either quarterly or semi-annually, though some may pay annually. The calculator provides an annualised figure, which you can divide by 12 to estimate a monthly average.
You have a tax-free Dividend Allowance each year (£500 for the 2024/25 tax year onwards). Any dividend income above this allowance is taxed at 8.75% (basic rate), 33.75% (higher rate), or 39.35% (additional rate), depending on your total income.
