DLA & PIP FAQ

Everything you need to know about applying for and managing disability benefits in the UK.

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a tax-free benefit for children under 16 who need extra help with personal care or have difficulty getting around due to a physical or mental disability. For adults aged 16 to State Pension age, DLA has been replaced by Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

DLA consists of two components: the Care Component (for help with personal care, supervision, or cooking) and the Mobility Component (for help with walking or getting around outdoors). You can be eligible for one or both, depending on your specific needs.

DLA is for children under 16. Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is the equivalent benefit for individuals aged 16 to State Pension age. PIP assesses how your condition affects your daily life and mobility, rather than just the condition itself, and has standard and enhanced rates for both components.

DLA is tax-free and does not count as income for most means-tested benefits. In fact, receiving DLA can often increase your entitlement to other benefits, such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, or Carer’s Allowance for someone who looks after you.
