Dentist Salary FAQ

Everything you need to know about dental earnings, UDA rates, and financial planning for UK dentists.

Dentist salaries in the UK vary widely. NHS Dental Associates typically earn between £40,000 and £70,000 annually, while Private Associates can earn £60,000 to £100,000+. Practice Owners often earn £80,000 to £150,000+, and Dental Trainees (DF1/DF2) usually start around £35,000 to £45,000.

A UDA (Unit of Dental Activity) is the measure of work done by an NHS dentist. Associates are paid a set rate per UDA (typically £20 to £35, depending on the practice and region). Your annual NHS income is largely determined by your UDA rate multiplied by the number of UDAs you complete annually.

NHS dental work is automatically subject to the NHS Pension Scheme unless you actively choose to opt out. Contributions are tiered based on your pensionable earnings, ranging from 5% to 14.5%, with significant employer contributions added by the NHS.

Private dentistry generally offers higher earning potential per hour and more control over your schedule and treatments. However, NHS dentistry provides a steadier, guaranteed flow of patients and access to the valuable NHS Pension Scheme, which can offset the lower per-hour earnings.
