Decimal to Fraction FAQ

Everything you need to know about converting decimals to fractions.

Write the decimal as a fraction with the decimal digits as the numerator and a power of 10 (10, 100, 1000, and so on) matching the number of decimal places as the denominator. Then simplify the fraction by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.

For a repeating decimal, set the decimal equal to a variable, multiply both sides by a power of 10 that shifts the repeating block to the left of the decimal point, then subtract the original equation to cancel the repeating part. Solving the resulting equation gives the fraction, which can then be simplified.

A mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction, such as 1 and 3/4. Any decimal greater than 1 can be expressed either as an improper fraction, where the numerator is larger than the denominator, or as a mixed number showing the whole and fractional parts separately.

Simplifying, or reducing, a fraction expresses it in its lowest terms by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. A simplified fraction is easier to read, compare, and use in further calculations, and is the standard way fractions are presented in maths.
