Run Rate FAQ

Everything you need to know about calculating and interpreting cricket run rates.

Run rate is calculated by dividing the total runs scored by the number of overs faced. For example, a team on 150 runs after 25 overs has a run rate of 6.00 runs per over.

Required run rate is the average number of runs a chasing team needs to score per over to reach the target within the remaining overs. It is calculated as runs still needed divided by overs remaining.

In cricket notation, the digits after the decimal point represent balls, not tenths of an over. For example, 12.4 overs means 12 overs and 4 balls, which equals 76 balls in total, since each over has 6 balls.

A projected score estimates the final total a batting team is on track to reach if it continues scoring at its current run rate for the full allotted overs. It is a simple extrapolation and does not account for wickets in hand or changing match conditions.
