Compare Your Color Gamuts

Choose two colour spaces, or enter custom red, green and blue primaries from a monitor spec sheet. The calculator measures each gamut, shows how much they overlap and plots both triangles on the CIE chromaticity diagram.

💡 Tip: Gamut area is a 2D measure. It ignores brightness, so it is not the same as full 3D colour volume. For comparing against a spec sheet, use CIE 1931 xy. For a more realistic view of how different two gamuts look, use CIE 1976 u′v′.
1

Primaries

Each gamut is defined by three corner points: the red, green and blue primaries. Their x, y chromaticity coordinates set the size and shape of the triangle.

2

Gamut Area

The area of the triangle on the chromaticity diagram. A larger area means more saturated colours can be shown.

3

Coverage vs Overlap

Coverage is the share of one gamut that sits inside the other. A display can be larger than sRGB yet still miss part of it if its primaries are placed differently.

4

Choice of Diagram

CIE 1931 xy stretches the green region. CIE 1976 u′v′ spaces colours more evenly, so the percentages usually differ between the two.

Color Gamut Calculator FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about colour gamuts, coverage and display specs.

A color gamut is the range of colours a display, camera, printer or colour space can reproduce. It is usually drawn as a triangle on a CIE chromaticity diagram, with the corners at the red, green and blue primaries. A larger triangle means the device can show more saturated colours.

On the CIE 1931 xy diagram, Display P3 has roughly 36% more area than sRGB. The extra range is mostly in saturated reds and greens. Use the calculator to see the exact figure on the CIE 1976 u′v′ diagram too, where the difference looks smaller.

Gamut area is the size of a colour space on the chromaticity diagram. Gamut coverage is how much of a target colour space your display actually contains. A monitor can have a larger gamut than sRGB and still cover less than 100% of sRGB if its primaries sit in different places. This calculator reports both.

CIE 1976 u′v′ is more perceptually uniform, so equal distances look more like equal colour differences. CIE 1931 xy is the older and more widely quoted standard, and it exaggerates the green region. Manufacturers often quote xy figures, so choose xy to match a spec sheet and u′v′ for a more realistic comparison.

No. A wider gamut only helps when the content and software are colour managed. If sRGB content is shown on a wide gamut display without colour management, colours look over-saturated. A wider gamut also says nothing about accuracy, brightness or bit depth. This calculator measures 2D chromaticity area, not the full 3D colour volume.
