Chinese Horoscope FAQ
Everything you need to know about the Chinese Zodiac, elements, and how your birth year determines your astrological profile.
The Chinese Zodiac operates on a 12-year cycle, with each year represented by an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Additionally, a 10-year heavenly stem cycle assigns one of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) to each year, creating a full 60-year cycle.
The Chinese Zodiac year does not start on January 1st; it begins on the Lunar New Year, which typically falls between late January and mid-February. If your birthday falls before the Lunar New Year for your birth year, your true Chinese Zodiac sign is actually the animal of the previous year.
The five elements (Wu Xing) are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each element imparts specific characteristics to the zodiac animal it governs. For example, a Wood Tiger will have different traits than a Metal Tiger. The elements cycle every two years, while the animals cycle every 12 years.
Western astrology is based on the solar calendar and the position of the sun, moon, and planets at the time of birth, divided into 12 monthly signs. Chinese astrology is based on the lunar calendar, cycles of 12 years (animals) and 10 years (elements), and focuses heavily on the year of birth rather than the month.
The transition between zodiac animals happens at the exact moment of the Lunar New Year, which can occur at any time of day. If you were born on the exact day of the Lunar New Year, your sign depends on the precise time of your birth relative to the exact transition time. You may need a detailed BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) chart for absolute certainty.
Yin and Yang represent the dualistic nature of the universe. In the Chinese Zodiac, odd-numbered years (e.g., 1985, 2023) are associated with Yin (receptive, passive, feminine energy), while even-numbered years (e.g., 1984, 2024) are associated with Yang (active, creative, masculine energy). This alternates every year.
