Car Tax FAQ

Everything you need to know about UK Vehicle Excise Duty and managing your car tax.

Vehicle Excise Duty, commonly known as car tax or road tax, is an annual tax charged by the UK government on most vehicles used or kept on public roads. The amount depends on factors such as CO2 emissions, fuel type, and the vehicle’s list price.

First year car tax rates are based on a vehicle’s CO2 emissions at the point of registration. Vehicles with higher CO2 emissions are charged a higher first year rate, while zero and low emission vehicles benefit from reduced or nil rates.

If a vehicle has a list price of over £40,000 when new, an additional annual supplement applies on top of the standard rate for five years, starting from the second year of registration.

Electric vehicles have historically been exempt from car tax, but rules have changed so that electric vehicles are now subject to standard rate VED in the same way as petrol and diesel vehicles. Always check the latest rates on gov.uk before budgeting.
