For the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 tax years, the Capital Gains Tax Annual Exempt Amount (AEA) is frozen at £3,000 for individuals. This means the first £3,000 of your total capital gains in a tax year is completely tax-free.

For basic rate taxpayers, the rate is 10% for most assets (shares, crypto) and 18% for residential property. For higher and additional rate taxpayers, the rate is 20% for most assets and 24% for residential property.

Generally, no. Private Residence Relief (PRR) usually exempts your main home from Capital Gains Tax, provided it has been your only or main residence throughout the entire period of ownership. Letting relief may also apply in certain situations.

For UK residential property, you must report and pay the tax within 60 days of the completion date. For other assets (like shares or crypto), you report the gain via a Self Assessment tax return by the 31st of January following the end of the tax year.
