BBQ Budgeting FAQ
Everything you need to know about planning and pricing your next cookout.
On average, a basic backyard BBQ costs about $8–$12 per person, a standard cookout costs $15–$20 per person, and a premium BBQ with high-end meats and extensive sides can cost $25–$35+ per person.
A good rule of thumb is to plan for 1/2 pound (8 oz) of raw meat per adult for a standard BBQ, 3/4 pound (12 oz) for heavy eaters or longer events, and 1/4 pound (4 oz) per child. Always buy slightly more to account for shrinkage during cooking.
Beyond food and drinks, budget for disposable plates, cups, napkins, and utensils ($1–$2 per person), charcoal or propane ($20–$40), condiments ($15–$30), and ice ($10–$20). If hosting at a park, add $50–$150 for grill or tent rentals.
You can lower your BBQ budget by buying meat in bulk from warehouse stores, choosing chicken or pork over premium beef, asking guests to bring a side dish or drinks (potluck style), and using reusable plates and utensils instead of disposables.
