Mbps stands for megabits per second and is how internet providers advertise speed. MB/s stands for megabytes per second and is how file sizes and download progress are usually shown. Since there are 8 bits in a byte, you divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s.
Download time is calculated by dividing the file size by your actual throughput in megabytes per second. Since broadband speed is advertised in megabits, it is first converted to megabytes by dividing by 8 before the calculation.
