The UCAS Tariff is a numerical points system used by universities and colleges in the UK to compare applicants’ qualifications. Each grade achieved in approved qualifications (A-Levels, BTECs, T-Levels, etc.) is assigned a specific point value, allowing institutions to set standardised entry requirements across different qualification types.
An A grade at A-Level is worth 48 UCAS tariff points. The full scale runs from A* (56 points) down to E (16 points). Most students take three A-Levels, so three A grades would equal 144 UCAS points total — a strong offer for many mid-to-top tier universities.
Yes, but only at half the value of a full A-Level since the 2015 decoupling reform in England. A full AS-Level grade A is worth 20 points (compared to 48 for a full A-Level A). Yes, many additional qualifications carry UCAS tariff points. The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is worth up to 28 points at grade A*. Music grades (ABRSM), LAMDA, Core Maths, and other approved Level 3 qualifications also contribute. However, many universities do not include these in their formal offers, so always check individual course policies — some institutions view them favourably even when not counting them formally.
Yes, T-Levels are fully included in the UCAS Tariff.
