UK Fencing FAQ
Everything you need to know about garden fencing costs, regulations, and materials in the UK.
The average cost of a new garden fence in the UK ranges from £45 to £85 per metre for supply and installation, depending on the material and height. For a standard 10-metre run of 4ft closeboard fencing, you can expect to pay between £650 and £850. Lap panels are cheaper, typically costing £45 to £60 per metre fitted.
The cheapest type of fencing is typically standard lap panel fencing or trellis. Lap panels are mass-produced and quick to install, keeping labour costs down. If you are on a strict budget, treating existing panels or repairing broken gravel boards can also be a cost-effective alternative to a full replacement.
In the UK, you generally do not need planning permission for a fence up to 2 metres (approx. 6.5ft) high, provided it does not border a highway used by vehicles. If your fence is next to a road or footpath, the maximum height allowed without permission is 1 metre (approx. 3ft). Always check with your local council if you live in a conservation area.
There is no general rule in the UK about which neighbour owns the boundary fence. Ownership is usually determined by the title deeds of your property, which may show a ‘T’ mark on one side of the boundary. If there is no clear indication, it is often considered a party boundary, meaning both neighbours share responsibility.
Fence panels are cheaper and faster to install, making them ideal for flat, standard-sized gardens. However, featherboard (closeboard) fencing is much stronger, more durable, and can be stepped to follow the natural slope of uneven ground. If you live in a windy area or have sloping ground, closeboard is the better long-term investment.
A professional fencing team can typically install 15 to 20 metres of standard panel fencing in a single day. For larger gardens or more complex installations like closeboard fencing on uneven ground, it may take 2 to 3 days. Removing and disposing of an old fence will usually add an extra half-day to the project.
