UK Road Tax FAQ

Everything you need to know about Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), car tax bands, and DVLA rules.

UK Road Tax, or Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), is calculated based on your vehicle’s CO2 emissions, fuel type, and registration date. Cars registered on or after 1 March 2017 pay a First Year Rate based on CO2, followed by a Standard Rate (currently £190 for petrol/diesel). Cars registered before 1 March 2017 are taxed purely on CO2 emissions using older bands. Zero-emission electric vehicles currently pay £0.

Currently, pure electric vehicles (BEVs) with 0g/km CO2 emissions pay £0 in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for both the First Year Rate and the Standard Rate. However, from April 2025, electric cars will start paying the standard VED rate of £190 per year, and from April 2026, they will also be subject to the Expensive Car Supplement if their list price exceeded £40,000.

The Expensive Car Supplement (ECS) is an additional £410 per year added to the standard VED rate for cars registered on or after 1 March 2017 that had a list price over £40,000 when new. This supplement is paid for 5 years (from the second year of registration), after which the car reverts to the standard rate. It applies to all fuel types, including electric vehicles, until at least April 2025.
