💡 Bidding Tip: Decide your maximum bid before the auction starts and stick to it. It is easy to chase a lot in the moment and cancel out the saving you came for.
1

Start With a Fair Market Value

Use sold prices, not asking prices. A cautious value protects you from paying for a saving that isn’t there.

2

Add the Buyer’s Premium

The premium is charged on top of your winning bid, and VAT may apply to it. Check the terms in the auction catalogue.

3

Include Every Extra Cost

Repairs, delivery, storage, insurance and payment fees all reduce your saving. Lots sold as seen can need more work than expected.

4

Bid to a Target

Pick the discount you need to make the lot worthwhile. The max bid shown is the hammer price at which you just reach that target.

Costs on Top of the Hammer Price

The charges that commonly sit between your winning bid and your true cost. Exact rules vary by auction house and item type.

Auction Price vs Market Value FAQ

Answers to common questions about auction pricing, fees and bidding limits.

Enter the estimated market value, the hammer price, the buyer’s premium and any VAT on that premium, plus repair, transport and other costs. The calculator adds everything to give your true all-in cost, compares it with market value, and shows your saving or overpayment. It also works out the highest hammer price you can bid to reach a target discount.

The hammer price is the winning bid when the auctioneer closes the sale. It is not the final amount you pay, because buyer’s premium, VAT and other charges are usually added on top.

A buyer’s premium is a percentage of the hammer price that the auction house charges the winning bidder. In some places VAT is also charged on the premium. Always check the auction’s terms and conditions for the exact rate.

Decide the discount to market value you want, subtract your extra costs from the target all-in price, then divide by one plus the buyer’s premium including any VAT on it. The calculator does this for you and shows the highest hammer price to bid.

Look at recent sold prices for the same item in the same condition, such as completed listings, dealer prices and past auction results. Use a cautious figure, because asking prices are often higher than the price an item actually sells for.
