1

The Age Gap

The simple difference in years between the two ages. It stays the same for life, no matter how old both people become.

2

The Age Ratio

The younger age divided by the older age. A gap feels bigger at 20 and 26 than at 50 and 56 because the ratio is closer to 100% when both people are older.

3

Half Your Age Plus Seven

A popular rule of thumb that suggests a youngest age of half your age plus seven, and an oldest age of your age minus seven, doubled.

4

Ratio Over Time

As both people age, the ratio moves toward 100%. The projections show how the gap shrinks proportionally over the next 10 and 20 years.

Age Compatibility Calculator FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about age gaps and the half-your-age-plus-seven rule.

It is an informal rule of thumb for the youngest age a person might date. Divide your age by two and add seven. For example, a 40-year-old would get 27 as the suggested minimum age. It is a social guideline, not a scientific measure.

Reverse the formula: subtract seven from your age and multiply by two. A 30-year-old would get (30 − 7) × 2 = 46 as the upper end of the range.

Not necessarily. Values, communication, life goals and mutual respect matter far more than a number. The age gap is only one small factor, and many couples with wide gaps are happy while some same-age couples are not.

A five-year gap between 20 and 25 is a bigger proportional difference than five years between 45 and 50. The age ratio shows how close two ages are relative to each other, and it naturally moves closer to 100% as both people get older.

No. The calculator only accepts ages of 18 and over, and it is intended for general interest and entertainment rather than relationship advice.
