Understanding Your Savings
Key factors that influence how much you save
Accurate Daily Usage
Be honest about how many cigarettes you smoke or how much e-liquid you vape daily. This is the biggest driver of your long-term cost difference.
Amortised Device Costs
While a vape kit costs money upfront, dividing that cost by 365 days gives a realistic “daily cost” that fairly compares to a daily pack of cigarettes.
Tobacco Inflation
Government duties regularly increase cigarette prices. Your savings in year 3 or 5 will likely be greater than this static calculator projects.
Bulk Buying E-Liquid
Purchasing larger bottles (e.g., 100ml or 120ml) often reduces the cost per ml significantly, increasing your savings further.
Cost & Impact Comparison
Generalised averages to help you understand the broader financial and environmental impact of switching.
| Metric | Traditional Smoking | Vaping | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| High daily recurring cost | Low recurring cost, minor upfront device cost | Vaping | |
| Prices rise annually with duty | Stable or decreasing e-liquid prices | Vaping | |
| High environmental waste (butts, packaging) | Lower waste (recyclable bottles, reusable device) | Vaping | |
| Contains tar and 7,000+ chemicals | No tar, significantly fewer harmful chemicals | Vaping | |
| Strong, lingering odour on clothes and hair | Minimal, quickly dissipating scent | Vaping |
Savings Calculator FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about calculating the financial benefits of switching to vaping.
The calculator compares your daily cost of smoking cigarettes (based on cigarettes per day, pack size, and cost per pack) against the daily cost of vaping (based on e-liquid consumption, bottle cost, and amortised device cost). It then projects your savings over 1 month, 1 year, and 5 years.
For the vast majority of users, yes. While there is an initial upfront cost for a vaping device, the ongoing cost of e-liquid is significantly lower than buying daily packs of cigarettes. Most users save hundreds to thousands in their first year.
You should include the cost of your e-liquid (price per bottle and bottle size), your average daily consumption in millilitres (ml), and optionally, the cost of your device or replacement coils spread over a year to account for maintenance.
The calculator uses your current local prices for a static projection. However, tobacco prices historically rise faster than inflation due to government duties, meaning your actual long-term savings from switching will likely be even higher than the calculator shows.
This calculator is optimised for refillable vaping systems, which offer the highest savings. If you use disposable vapes, you can still use the tool by entering “1” as the bottle size and the cost of a single disposable as the “bottle cost”, though savings will be lower than refillable options.
