To convert miles per gallon to litres per 100km, divide 235.215 by the MPG value if using US gallons, or 282.481 by the MPG value if using UK (Imperial) gallons. For example, 30 US MPG equals 235.215 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100km. This inverse relationship exists because MPG measures distance per unit of fuel, while L/100km measures fuel used per unit of distance.
A US gallon (3.785 litres) is smaller than a UK/Imperial gallon (4.546 litres), so the same vehicle will show a higher MPG figure in the UK than in the US. To convert, multiply US MPG by 1.20095 to get UK MPG, or divide UK MPG by 1.20095 to get US MPG. For example, 30 US MPG is equivalent to about 36.03 UK MPG.
L/100km expresses fuel consumed per fixed distance, making it easier to directly compare fuel costs and consumption between vehicles — a lower number always means better efficiency. MPG expresses distance travelled per unit of fuel, where a higher number is better, but the relationship between MPG and actual fuel used is non-linear, which can make small MPG differences misleading at higher values.

Unlike MPG, where a higher number means better efficiency, L/100km works in the opposite direction: a lower L/100km figure means less fuel is needed to travel 100 kilometres, indicating better fuel economy. A typical efficient petrol car might average 6-7 L/100km, while a larger SUV might average 10-12 L/100km.
To convert L/100km to US MPG, divide 235.215 by the L/100km value. To convert to UK MPG, divide 282.481 by the L/100km value. For example, 8 L/100km equals approximately 29.40 US MPG or 35.31 UK MPG.
Kilometres per litre (km/L) measures how many kilometres a vehicle travels on one litre of fuel, similar in concept to MPG but using metric units throughout. To convert US MPG to km/L, multiply by 0.425144. To convert UK MPG to km/L, multiply by 0.354006. A higher km/L value indicates better fuel efficiency, just like MPG.

Engine size does not affect the mathematical conversion between MPG and L/100km — the formula is purely a unit conversion based on gallon and mile definitions. However, engine size, weight, aerodynamics, and driving style all affect the actual real-world MPG or L/100km figure a vehicle achieves, which is what gets converted between units.
