Understanding Redelivery Fees
Key concepts for managing missed parcel deliveries
The Failed Attempt
When a delivery fails, the courier leaves a ‘Something for You’ card. The clock starts ticking on your free holding period from this date.
Standard Holding Periods
Most domestic parcels are held for 10–18 days. International shipments may have shorter windows (e.g., 7–10 days) before storage fees or return procedures begin.
Redirection vs. Collection
Collecting from a local depot or pickup shop is almost always free. Redirecting to a new postcode may incur a fee, while rescheduling to the same address is usually free.
Return to Sender Costs
If uncollected, the parcel is returned. While the courier may not charge you directly, the retailer may deduct the original or return shipping cost from your refund.
Common Courier Redelivery Policies
Typical holding periods and fee structures for major delivery services operating in the UK.
| Courier / Service | Holding Period | Redelivery Fee | Storage Fee (After Period) |

| DPD UK | 10 days | Free (to same address) | Free (then Returned to Sender) |
| Evri / Hermes | 10 days | Free | Free (then Returned to Sender) |
| Yodel | 10 days | Free | Free (then Returned to Sender) |
| International (e.g., DHL/FedEx) | 5–7 days | £5 – £15 (varies) | £1 – £5 per day (after grace period) |
Redelivery FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked questions about missed deliveries and associated costs.
For most major UK couriers, standard redelivery is free if arranged within the holding period (usually 10–18 days). However, some international or specialised services may charge a redelivery surcharge ranging from £3 to £15.
Most standard UK domestic couriers do not charge daily storage fees for the first 10 to 18 days. International shipments or freight services, however, may apply daily storage fees (e.g., £1–£5 per day) after a short grace period.
If a parcel is not collected or redelivered within the courier’s holding period (typically 18 days), it will be returned to the sender. You may be liable for the return shipping costs, and some sellers may deduct this from your refund.
Many couriers allow you to redirect a parcel to a different local address, a neighbour, or a pickup shop/locker. While redirecting to a local pickup point is often free, changing to a completely new postcode may incur a redirection fee.
If the courier attempted delivery at the wrong address or damaged the ‘Something for You’ card, the redelivery should be entirely free. Contact the sender or the courier’s customer service to waive any incorrect charges.
