💡 Pro Tip: If you are paid a fixed annual salary, you can reverse-calculate your hourly rate by dividing your salary by 52, and then dividing that result by your contracted weekly hours. Always ensure your average hourly rate (including overtime) does not fall below the National Minimum Wage.

Work Hours & Pay FAQ

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about calculating wages, overtime rules, and UK employment rights.

Divide your annual salary by 52 to get your weekly pay, then divide that by your contracted weekly hours. For example, £26,000 / 52 = £500 per week. £500 / 37.5 hours = £13.33 per hour.

Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, you cannot be forced to work more than 48 hours per week on average, typically averaged over a 17-week period. You can voluntarily opt out of this limit in writing.

By law, employers are not required to pay you for your statutory rest breaks (e.g., the 20-minute break for shifts over 6 hours) unless your employment contract specifically states that breaks are paid.

There is no statutory right to overtime pay in the UK, but if your contract includes it, it is typically calculated at ‘time and a half’ (1.5x your normal hourly rate) or ‘double time’ (2x). Your average pay, including overtime, must not fall below the National Minimum Wage.
